Ultra Violet Clarifiers eliminate green water and see clearly

What is an Ultra Violet Clarifier?
An ultra violet clarifier is an electrical unit through which water is pumped before it enters the biological filter and it’s sole purpose is to eliminate green water and reduce harmful bacteria in the pond.

How Does It Work?
As the water is passed through the unit, it is subjected to high levels of U.V light. This U.V light causes the microscopic single cell algae to be clumped together allowing them to be collected and broken down by the biological filter, thus eliminating the problem of green water.

Giving You Complete Filtration
Remember: although a U.V Clarifier will give you clear water, it can only be used in conjunction with a biological filter as it does not actually break down the coagulated algae. This break-down is the function of the biological filter.

Remember: clear water isn’t always healthy water....
Although the clarity of the water will improve after a couple of weeks, you should check the toxin (Ammonia and Nitrite) levels to make sure the biological filter is coping with all the extra waste produced by the coagulated algae.
Please also remember that large fish such as ghost carp and koi can cause murky water by stirring up the bottom of the pond. This murky water should not be confused with suspended algae.

How to choose your UV
You will need to know your pond volume to choose a suitable UV (refer to Pond Volume). To find the right UV simply use the best suited symbol below and match it to your pond size in the tables. The table shows the absolute maximum capacity a particular unit is capable of. Always go up a model if in any doubt.

The Way To Think.....

  • A U.V clarifier looks after Clarity.

  • A Biological filter looks after the water quality.

  • Both units in conjunction can produce clear and healthy water.

Important...
To ensure your biological filter is able to cope with the extra organic material produced  by an U.V, it is recommended to run any new or cleaned bio-filter for at least 3 weeks prior to switching on the U.V. — this allows adequate time for the beneficial bacteria to build up.

World of Water advise that a Qualified Electrician is
consulted prior to installation of any electrical
equipment in, on or near water or ponds.

Tips on Choosing an Ultra Violet Clarifier

  • You cannot have an U.V. clarifier too big for your pond.

  • With shallow ponds pick a larger unit.

  • If your pond is exposed to full sun with no plants, again pick the next model size up.

  • Ensure the unit can cope with your desired flow rate.

  • You might find that a Combined Ultra Violet Clarifier and Biological filter may suit your needs

Tips On Installing an Ultra Violet Clarifier....
Always follow manufacturers installation guides.

Use an earth leakage circuit breaker with any pond or outdoor equipment. If in doubt consult a qualified electrician.

  • Most Ultra Violet Clarifiers are fitted between the pump and filter, outside of the  pond.

  • Ensure the Ultra Violet Clarifier is accessible for maintenance.

  • Ultra Violet Clarifier should be protected from any potential damage.

  • Check stepped hose tails have been cut to the right size.

  • Although most units are weather proof, shelter from frosts etc. (Do NOT wrap in plastic).

Tips On Maintaining an Ultra Violet Clarifier.

  • Always isolate the power supply before starting any work.

  • Never look directly at an illuminated U.V bulb.

  • Consult the manufacturers instructions for individual unit requirements.

  • The Ultra Violet bulb will generally need replacing after six months work.

  • When replacing the bulb change the “O” rings seals at the same time

  • The quartz sleeve is very delicate, handle with care.

  • Remove any hard water residue or dirt from the Quartz sleeve as necessary.

  • Store and drain in the winter if not being used.
